Hi @MRHUY1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that your HP laptop running Windows 11 is repeatedly muting and unmuting the speakers by itself. I’ll be glad to help.

Before we proceed, could you please confirm:

  • What is the exact HP laptop model/Product Number? Please do not post the Serial Number publicly.
  • When this happens, does the volume/mute indicator appear on the screen automatically?
  • Does the mute key or its LED also switch on and off?
  • Does the issue continue when headphones are connected?
  • Have you disconnected any USB devices, docks, external monitors, Bluetooth headsets, or external keyboards and checked again?
  • Did this begin after a recent Windows, BIOS, or driver update?

The exact product information is important because we need to check the correct HP audio, chipset, and other available drivers for your particular notebook.

Please try these steps
1. Disconnect external devices
Disconnect all USB devices, docks, external monitors, headphones, and Bluetooth audio devices. Restart the laptop and test using only the built-in speakers.
This helps us determine whether another connected device is changing the audio state.

2. Check the Windows sound output
Open Settings > System > Sound.
Under Output, select the laptop speakers and verify that the volume is turned up and not muted. Microsoft Windows recommends confirming the correct playback device when troubleshooting audio issues.

3. Disable Audio Enhancements temporarily
Open Settings > System > Sound, select your speakers under Output, and set Audio enhancements to Off.
Audio enhancements can sometimes interfere with normal audio operation.

4. Run the HP Audio Check
Please use Fix Sound Issues | HP® Support.
HP's Audio Check performs diagnostic tests for sound problems and can help identify or resolve common audio issues.

5. Check the audio driver

HP also recommends checking or updating the audio driver when troubleshooting notebook audio problems.

However, please send us the exact HP laptop model/Product Number first, so we can check the appropriate HP drivers for your model rather than having you install a driver that might not apply.

If the mute indicator is actually appearing by itself and the mute-key LED is switching at the same time, please mention that as well. That information will help us determine whether this is primarily an audio software issue or whether the mute-key/input behavior also needs to be investigated.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
