This fixed my problem too, thanks!

I know the problem has something to do with the IDT High Definition Audio driver but can't seem to get it to work consistently.  After Christmas, I got the Integrated Microphone to work but still was not able to get it to work with Skype.   Recently tried it again, and now back to internal microphone not working again.  Spent over 4 hours with customer support with no luck. Best advice regarding this issue, save your time and spend the money - buy a headset.  There are several threads about the microphone not working and none of them have a solution.

I tried all the software remedies but nothing worked. Then I noticed the web camera had stopped working. So I googled the issue and found that there is an issue common to the dv7 with the connector in the webcam/microphone array, the lead is (possibly) too short and it unplugs itself. Plugging it back in resolves both issues (you need to unclip the trim round the screen to access it)

unbelievable! Thanks a lot Robert_N

I almost gave up using Skype, the webcam and integrated Microphone......

HP should highlight this easy fix. With the non working Switchable graphic and now this, I might look for a different manufacturer next time I want to buy a PC. HP is not what it used to be.....

Thank you very much, Kiran!

Your solution worked perfectly for me.  It's a good thing that you posted this as the alternative solution from HP support was to "go down the rabbit hole" and reinstall the driver for the sound card that caused other hardware issues w/o solving the original issue at all.
