I have an HP Pavillion laptop that is about four years old.  Previously, the built-in mic worked, but lately, it has been failing.

When I go into the utilities, I see the output sound volume, which is adjustable and working fine.

When I look right below that, I see the microphone volume, but it will not move off zero. The indicator reads, "No microphone can be found."

Its especially troubling on Zoom, when nobody can hear me.

Could be due to Audio driver what is your machine ? Please try a clean install Audio driver

1. Download https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp131501-132000/sp131797.exe

                         and save on your computer
2. Use Device Manager to uninstall audio driver (if any),
3. Reboot machine,
4. Install downloaded file above,
5. Reboot machine.

Hope this helps. If not please post what is your machine back.

Regards
