Hi @alison275,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is when your HP laptop’s audio sounds weak and you can’t find the Enhancements tab or the High Definition Audio option. It feels like the sound is trapped behind a wall. This usually happens due to missing or incorrect audio drivers or disabled audio features.

Here’s how to fix it step by step:

1. Check Audio Device

  • Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar → Sound settings.
  • Under Output, confirm the device is Realtek High Definition Audio or Conexant ISST Audio (depending on your HP model).
  • If it shows Generic Audio Driver, that’s the issue.

2. Update/Reinstall Audio Driver

  • Go to Device ManagerSound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click your audio device → Uninstall device (check “Delete driver software”).
  • Restart your laptop.
  • Download the latest driver from HP: 👉 Official HP® Support
    • Enter your laptop model (HP 15.6 series).
    • Download Audio Driver (Realtek or Conexant).

3. Enable Audio Enhancements

  • After installing the correct driver:
    • Right-click speaker iconSound settingsMore sound settings.
    • Select your playback device → PropertiesEnhancements tab should now appear.
    • Enable Loudness Equalization for higher volume.

4. Check Windows Audio Settings

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound > Advanced sound options.
  • Ensure Volume Mixer sliders are at 100%.

5. BIOS & Windows Update

  • Update BIOS from the HP site (sometimes audio features are tied to firmware).
  • Run Windows Update for optional driver updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
