Recently had a disc clean up to remove ransomware then had windows 10 reloaded. I now find that the internal mic is not working . The speaker works fine.
I have tried the trouble shooter but it cannot detect a problem. Everything to do with the internal microphone is enabled.
the following are the sound settings - ( recording) internal and external mics enabled. ( stereo mix unavailable 0
(Playback) digital audio hdmi not plugged in, speakers/headphones default device,
independant headphones default device.
Communications - Do nothing is selected.
I am at a loss to puzzle out why I cannot record sound. Can anyone please help - or is it a case of new mic needed. ? I dont have an external mic to try if it works. Could it be that an external mic is needed ?
thanks for ant help you can give

Welcome to the HP Forums,
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
As I understand your internal microphone isn't working,
No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
Have you been ensured it's enabled on recording devices under speaker?
Did you reinstall the drivers?
While you respond to that, here's a few things that should help:
There are a number of options in Windows sound settings that need to be configured so that the computer recognizes and works with the microphone. Use the steps below to modify the sound configuration as necessary for your microphone.
Open the Sound window
-
Connect the microphone to the computer.
-
In Windows, search for and open Sound.
The Sound window opens.
-
Click the Recording tab in the Sound window.
Figure : Recording tab in the Sound window
-
Then use the following steps to troubleshoot the microphone.
Step 1: Make sure the computer recognizes the microphone
-
In the Sound window, click the Recording tab.
-
Right-click an empty area of the Sound window.
-
Click Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.
Figure : Disabled and disconnected devices shown in the Sound window
-
If the microphone is listed as Currently unavailable or Not plugged in, disconnect it, then reconnect it to the port. If the microphone is still not detected, refer to the Check the microphone section of this document.
-
Test the microphone by speaking into it.
Look at the gray bars next to the device name on the Recording tab:
-
If the gray bars next to the device name change to green, the device is active and an audio signal is passing through the microphone port. The issue should now be resolved.
However, you might still want to make sure the microphone is set as the default microphone using the Step 2: Setting the default microphone section of this document.
-
If the bars remain gray and inactive, the computer is not recognizing a signal. Leave the recording tab open and refer to the Step 2: Setting the default microphone section of this document.
Figure : Sound window with Recording tab showing a detected signal for the Microphone device
-
Step 2: Setting the default microphone
The microphone you want to use might need to be set as the default microphone. Follow these steps to set your microphone as the default microphone:
-
From the Recording tab of the Sound window, select the port that you want to use. There could be one or more ports.
-
If the device you want to use contains a small circle with an arrow pointing down, the device is disabled. To enable the device, right-click the device name and select Enable.
CLICK HERE FOR MORE STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS.
(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)
Keep me posted,
If the information I've provided was helpful,
give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Many thanks for your reply. Just to remind you, I have had the Pc cleaned up following a ransomware attack. The windows 10 was reinstalled by the repair shop.
With regard to sound drivers being reinstalled I dont know. however, I have checked everything is working normally as far as device manager is concerned and the right defaults are set.
There are 2 things I have discovered, The blue columns on right of sound / microhone do not move when iIspeak into them and although I have a 64 bit windows 10 OS, the sound drivers are listed as being 32 bit.
Could that be the problem?? If you think it is, what can I do about it please?
regards kevin

Hi Guys, here is an update to my problem. I have downloaded and reloaded drivers but to no avail.
I have obtained headset/ microphone and these work perfectly. However, both the small jacks need to be plugged in at same time because the phones or mic will not work independently. Skype echo test needs both jacks to be in together.
Any music file on PC plays normally through internal and blue tooth connected speakers.
Cortana works ok through external mic and headphones but cannot hear me speak otherwise using internal mic.
Hope this helps. many thanks kevin
