@jckneill, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Chromebook's internal microphone is only producing static. Here are some effective troubleshooting steps you can try:

Restart Your Chromebook

  • Click the time in the bottom-right corner > Power icon > Restart.
  • After rebooting, test the mic using online-voice-recorder.com.

Check Microphone Permissions

  • Go to chrome://settings/content/microphone.
  • Ensure the correct microphone is selected and that no sites are blocked from using it.

Update ChromeOS

  • Go to Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates.
  • Install any available updates and restart.

Disable Bluetooth

  • Sometimes Bluetooth devices interfere with the mic.
  • Turn off Bluetooth from the system tray and test again.

Advanced Fixes

Use a USB or Headset Microphone

  • As a temporary workaround, plug in a USB mic or a headset with a mic.

Powerwash (Factory Reset)

  • Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash.
  • This will reset your Chromebook to factory settings. Make sure to back up your data first.
