HP 255 15.6 inch G10 Notebook PC (78U76AV)

Hello, I have a problem with my HP 255 G10 laptop running Windows 11.
The built-in microphone is not working at all – it doesn’t even show up in the Device Manager.
I’ve checked all drivers and sound settings, but there is no sign of the microphone device.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hello @Mar4ch ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Step 1: Confirm it’s not disabled at BIOS level (VERY IMPORTANT)

If the mic doesn’t appear in Device Manager at all, BIOS is the first thing to check.

Shut down the laptop

Power it on and repeatedly tap F10 (BIOS Setup)

Go to:

Advanced → Built-in Device Options

Make sure:

Internal Microphone = Enabled

Audio Device = Enabled

Press F10 → Save & Exit

👉 If the mic was disabled here, Windows will never detect it.

Step 2: Install the correct AUDIO driver (not Windows Update)

Windows Update often installs incomplete audio drivers for this model.

Go to HP Support → HP 255 G10 (78U76AV)

Select Windows 11

Download and install in this order:

AMD Chipset Driver

Realtek Audio Driver (or Conexant, depending on region)

Restart after each install

Step 3: Check Device Manager (Hidden devices)

Press Win + X → Device Manager

Click View → Show hidden devices

Expand:

Sound, video and game controllers

Audio inputs and outputs

Look for:

“Microphone”

“Realtek Audio”

“Unknown device”

“Audio Controller” with a warning ⚠️

👉 If you see Unknown device, that confirms a missing driver.

Step 4: Windows Privacy settings (Windows 11 blocks mic silently)

Even if the driver is installed, Windows 11 can block it completely.

Go to:

Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone

Turn ON:

Microphone access

Let apps access your microphone

Let desktop apps access your microphone

Scroll down and confirm apps (Zoom, Teams, etc.) are allowed

Step 5: Audio service reset (quick fix)

Press Win + R

Type:

services.msc

Restart these services:

Windows Audio

Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

Step 6: Update BIOS (Fixes missing audio devices on G10)

Go to HP Support for your model

Download latest BIOS

Install with charger connected

Restart

⚠️ Do NOT skip this step if mic still doesn’t appear.

Step 7: Hardware test (HP Diagnostics)

Shut down

Power on → tap Esc

Press F2 (HP PC Hardware Diagnostics)

Run:

Audio test

Microphone test

Results:

Mic not detected in diagnostics → hardware issue

Detected → Windows/driver issue

When it is a HARDWARE issue

If ALL of these are true:

Mic not in BIOS

Mic not in HP Diagnostics

Clean Windows + correct drivers installed

Then the cause is usually:

Loose mic cable

Faulty mic array If under warranty → HP repair will replace the mic module

Hope this helps!
