i have an HP Laptop 17 cp2124od. I can't get the microphone to work. I've tried lots of different things, like making sure antivirus is not blocking it, runnning tests in zoom. checking settings in Edge, testing it in chrome, running HP assist. I can't really figure it out at this point. Does the machine even have an internal microphone?

Hi @paulinca99,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Yes, your HP Laptop 17-cp2124od does have a built-in microphone, which includes: HP True Vision 720p HD camera with temporal noise reduction and integrated dual array digital microphones. So, the microphone is there — the issue is likely software-related. Since you've already tried updating drivers, checking browser and app permissions, and running HP Support Assistant, here are a few more advanced steps to try:
1. Check the Microphone in Device Manager
- Press Windows + X → choose Device Manager
- Expand Audio inputs and outputs
- Look for Microphone (Realtek, AMD, or HD Audio)
- If it’s missing, click Action > Scan for hardware changes
- If it’s there, right-click → Update driver
2. Enable Microphone in Sound Settings
- Go to Settings > System > Sound
- Under Input, make sure the correct microphone is selected
- Click Device properties → ensure it’s not disabled
- Click Start test to check if it picks up sound
3. Check Privacy Settings
- Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone
- Make sure the Microphone access is on
- Ensure apps like Zoom, Edge, and Chrome have permission
4. Run Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
- Run the Recording Audio troubleshooter
5. BIOS Check (Optional)
Sometimes the microphone can be disabled in the BIOS:
- Restart your laptop and press Esc, then F10 to enter BIOS
- Look for Integrated Peripherals or Built-in Device Options
- Ensure the Microphone is enabled
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
