My microphone does not work and by testing it states "Microphone not authorized. Please check your media permissions setting."

As far as I am aware I have given access to all that I can but it still does not work.

Any suggestions for somebody who has no knowledge of problems and is computer illiterate.

Thanks

Hi @Frosty61,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your microphone is not working and shows “Microphone not authorized. Please check your media permissions setting.” Let’s go through a few simple steps to check what could be causing this and enable the microphone.

Check Windows microphone privacy settings
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
Make sure Microphone access is turned ON.

Allow apps to use the microphone
In the same Microphone settings page, turn ON Let apps access your microphone.
Without this, no app is allowed to use the microphone.

Enable microphone access for desktop apps
Scroll down and make sure Let desktop apps access your microphone is ON.
Many programs (Zoom, Teams, browsers) need this enabled.

Check app-specific microphone permission
Scroll through the list of apps and confirm the affected app is set to On.
If it is Off, the app will report “not authorized.”

Select the correct microphone device
Go to Settings → System → Sound → Input.
Choose the correct microphone from the drop-down list and speak to see if the level moves.

Test the microphone in Windows
In Sound settings, select the microphone and click Test.
If the bar moves, the microphone is working at the system level.

Check that the microphone is not muted
Look for a physical mute button or key on the keyboard or headset.
Some laptops and headsets can mute the mic at hardware level.

Restart the computer
Restarting applies permission changes correctly.
After restart, test the microphone again.

Check Device Manager
Right-click Start → Device Manager → expand Audio inputs and outputs.
Make sure the microphone shows without a warning icon.

Update or reinstall audio driver
In Device Manager, right-click the microphone or audio device → Update driver.
If needed, restart after updating to refresh permissions and detection.

I hope this helps.
