Microphone is not working

Hi @ljhijlbklhbhlkv,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that you are experiencing a microphone issue on your HP computer. Since microphone problems can be caused by Windows audio settings, privacy permissions, or the microphone driver, let’s start by checking these areas.

Run the Windows Audio Recording Troubleshooter.

The built-in troubleshooter checks the Windows audio recording service and related settings and can automatically correct some common microphone problems.

  • In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.
  • Select Troubleshooting.
  • Under Hardware and Sound, select Troubleshoot audio recording.
  • If prompted for administrator permission, provide the required confirmation.
  • When the Sound troubleshooter opens, select Next.
  • Select the microphone or recording device you want to troubleshoot and follow the on-screen recommendations.

If the microphone still does not work, continue with the steps below.

Check microphone and camera privacy settings.

If the issue started after a Windows update, microphone privacy permissions may have been changed.

  • Open Settings from the Start menu.
  • Go to Privacy and select Microphone.
  • Make sure microphone access for this device is enabled.
  • Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone.
  • Make sure microphone access is enabled for the applications that need it.
  • Repeat the same check under the camera privacy settings if your application also requires webcam access.

Reinstall the microphone driver.

If the microphone is still not working, reinstalling its driver can help if the installed driver has become corrupted or is not loading correctly.

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand audio inputs and outputs.
  • Right-click the microphone or recording device.
  • Select "Uninstall device" and confirm the removal if prompted.
  • Restart the computer.

Windows should detect the microphone again and attempt to reinstall the appropriate driver after the restart.

If the issue persists, please provide the exact HP model name or product number and let us know whether the microphone is missing from Device Manager, detected but not recording, or producing no sound in a specific application. This will help determine the appropriate next step.

Best regards,
Kuroi_Kenshi
