@LJL10, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
The HP Laptop PC 15s-fq2000 (2D118AV) typically comes equipped with a built-in microphone. If your system is indicating that no devices are found, there could be a few reasons for this issue, which include drivers not being installed properly, settings being misconfigured, or hardware disconnections. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and set up the built-in microphone:
Steps to Check Microphone Settings
Check Hardware Connection:
- Ensure that your laptop's microphone isn't muted via any physical switches or settings on the laptop itself.
Verify Microphone in Sound Settings:
- Open the Settings on your laptop from the Start menu.
- Navigate to System > Sound.
- Look under the Input section to see if your microphone is listed. If it is not, it may indicate that the drivers are not installed.
Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers:
- Go to Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).
- Expand the section Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click on your audio device and select Update driver.
- Choose the option to search automatically for updated driver software.
- If that doesn’t work, you might want to uninstall the device and restart your laptop to allow Windows to reinstall the drivers automatically.
Check Privacy Settings:
- In Settings, go to Privacy > Microphone.
- Make sure that Allow apps to access your microphone is turned on.
- Ensure that the specific apps you want to use with the microphone are allowed access.
Run Windows Troubleshooter:
- In Settings, navigate to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Recording Audio and run the troubleshooter to see if Windows can automatically fix the issue.
Additional Configuration
- If your microphone starts showing in the Sound settings, you can test it by speaking and checking the input levels.
- You can adjust levels by clicking on Device properties under Input settings in the Sound menu.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your detailed suggestions. I had tried most of them previously, but worked through your list systematically. The finally step if reinstalling drivers, (using Nortons driver update utility) was sussessful.
