HP Envy X360 15m bp011dx
I have the hp envy x360 and the mute key is constantly on and when i check the audio button it seems as if isomeone is constantly turning it on and off. the keyboard orange light stays on steady but the affect as seen from volume control is as if someone was repeatedly pressing the mute key. i have updated the drivers and this does not seem to help. the keyboard input itself has slowed down a little too however the trackpad and everything else seems to be working fine. I am wondering if this may be a result of some hardware failure

Hi @rjam92,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! As I understand you are having issues with the mute key is constantly ON on your HP notebook. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you checked if the mute button is not stuck inside?

Have you tried to perform a Bios defaults?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the Notebook: Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

Performing Bios Defaults:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to check if the Mute key is not stuck inside. If that is the case, then I would suggest this could be a possible hardware failure. I would recommend you contact our HP phone support for available service related options.

Will the hard reset erase data from my PC? Also i have realised that the problem is not localised to the mute key but there are other erratic behaviours too which became obcious once i disabled the sound driver to keep it from generating repeated volume low events. at this point i think the problem might be with the volume low key and that is just the start of it. i am also noticing slow typing on my PC and reduced speed. when i go into tablet mode the digital keyboard doesnt pop up.

Hi @rjam92, I am the Mr.Robot. It looks like you were interacting with @Jeet_singh, but he is out of the office today, so I'll take over from here.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you needed to know will hard reset erase any data from your PC.

No, a Hard reset will not delete any data from your PC. It just releases the static charge from your laptop.

Tru updating the audio driver and BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.

Uninstall the audio drivers from device manager.

Click on the search box, enter Device Manager, and select it from the list of results. Under Sound, video, and game controllers. Right-click on the audio driver and click uninstall.

Link to update the audio driver.

Also, update the BIOS using this link.
