Microsoft Windows 11

my computer's mic isn't working properly. when I test the mic in the "setting"  I can hear my voice. But when I'm trying to speak in the middle of a game such as CS GO or REPO, no one can hear me.   And nothing has changed even if I bought an external mic connected with the 3.5mm slot. Still, no one can hear me.

@danacanana, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Since your mic works in Windows settings but not in games, that means the hardware and drivers are fine — the issue is with permissions, sound input configuration, or app-specific settings.

Try these steps in order:

Check Windows Privacy Settings

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

Make sure “Microphone access” and “Let apps access your microphone” are both turned ON.

Scroll down and ensure the specific games (CS:GO, REPO, or Steam) have permission to use the microphone.

Confirm Default Input Device

Right-click the sound icon on the taskbar → Sound settings.

Under Input, make sure your working mic (either built-in or external) is set as Default Device.

If using an external mic, check that it appears under Input devices and shows movement in the test bar when you speak.

Check App-Level Mic Settings

For CS:GO:

Open CS:GO → Settings → Audio → Voice.

Ensure Enable Voice is ON.

Select the correct Microphone device.

Run a test using Voice Loopback.

For Steam Voice Chat:

Go to Steam → Settings → Voice.

Make sure the correct input device is chosen and test your mic.

Disable Exclusive Mode

Right-click the sound icon → Sound Settings → More sound settings.

Under the Recording tab, right-click your mic → Properties → Advanced.

Uncheck “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” and “Give exclusive mode applications priority.”

Click Apply → OK.

Test with Another App

Open Voice Recorder or Discord and record/test your voice.

If it works there but not in games, it’s definitely game configuration or permissions.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
