SOLVED! no sound for about 6months, today I spent 6 hours downloading files & driver downloaders from Intel, HP misc sights. rebooted as needed. no luck. finally I went through the steps to update driver, browsing for driver in documents & download files. reinstalling all hp apps & drivers, selecting {old school)
steps: device manager> update driver> Choose from available drivers> graphics & sound> Intel (not (R)Intel)> scroll to bottom for latest most versions start with 27, bottom had 2 starting with 31> warning windows does not recommend installing because it can not verify it is safe> install anyway. 1 second later, the X across my sound icon disappears. For the first time in months I have internal speakers & it should have been my first step...
there is only about 20 Intel sound drivers available by default in windows, I got lucky, with first try. You may need to try more than one. The option to choose from available drivers is not as obvious, but a few tries, the main point is windows doesn't mark driver as certified, so you just have to install anyway. Makes sense, it worked before updates... good luck
