Hi @CarolynKalchtha,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand that after the recent Windows 11 update, you're no longer getting any audio, and you only see NVIDIA and Microsoft audio devices under Sound, video and game controllers, with the Realtek audio device missing. Let's work through a few steps to help restore the audio.

1. Perform a BIOS Recovery

  • Connect the AC adapter to the notebook.
  • Press and hold the Windows + B keys.
  • While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds, then release only the Power button.
  • Continue holding the Windows + B keys for another 20–30 seconds and follow the on-screen instructions if the BIOS Recovery screen appears.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Shut down the notebook.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter and all external devices.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter and power the notebook back on.

3. Check Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Also, expand System devices and Other devices to check if there are any devices with a yellow exclamation mark or an Unknown device.
  • Let us know what you see.

4. Install the HP Audio Driver

  • Download and install the latest audio driver available for your exact HP notebook model from the HP Support website.
  • Restart the notebook after the installation completes and check whether the Realtek audio device reappears.

5. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off the notebook.
  • Turn it back on and immediately tap the Esc key repeatedly.
  • Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Select Component Tests > Audio and run the available test.
  • Please let us know the result, including any failure ID if one is displayed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
