Hi @yborkert

Welcome to the HP Support Community. Thanks for bringing this to our notice. That is terrible! I’m going to take care of this for you.

Could you provide me with the exact model of the PC? Use this link to find it:  https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03754824  (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...)

  • May I know if you have made any recent hardware or software changes to your system?
  • What happens when you connect a headphone to your system?
  • Did you try updating drivers on your system?

Let's start off by uninstalling the audio drivers on your PC from the device manager:

  • Right-Click on the start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers.
  • Then check the box to delete the software for this device.
  • Now restart the computer and then update the Bios, Chipset, and Audio drivers on your PC from our HP support website using this link.

Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer to this link to know how to use HP support assistant.

Once done, restart the computer and then check if the issue persists.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
