I have no laptop audio - all of a sudden - and i downloaded "HP Support Assistant 9", but install and setup files didn't work, and the message i received was "A newer version of HP Support Assistant is installed. Setup will now close" and it ended there without giving me any support towards installing a new audio driver. So my laptop is still without sound.

Hi @beecp,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your laptop audio and the HP Support Assistant. Let’s tackle the audio problem and the HP Support Assistant installation issue step by step.
1. Check Audio Settings
- Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Sounds.
- Under the Playback tab, ensure the correct playback device (like "Speakers") is set as default. If it’s disabled, right-click and enable it.
2. Check Volume Levels
- Ensure that the volume is turned up and not muted.
- Check the volume settings within any application you're trying to use for sound.
3. Update Audio Drivers Manually
Device Manager:
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click your audio device (like "Realtek High Definition Audio") and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Uninstall and Reinstall Driver:
- If updating doesn’t work, right-click the audio device again and select Uninstall device. Restart your laptop, and Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
4. Download Drivers from HP Website
- Visit the HP support website and enter your laptop model.
- Navigate to the Drivers section and look for audio drivers. Download and install the latest version available.
5. Fix HP Support Assistant Installation Issue
- Uninstall Previous Version: Since you’re getting the message about a newer version, try uninstalling the existing version first:
- Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Look for HP Support Assistant and uninstall it.
- Reinstall: After uninstalling, download the latest version of HP Support Assistant from the HP website.
6. Run the Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Click on Additional troubleshooters and select Playing Audio. Run the troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
7. Restart Audio Services
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
- Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and select Restart. Make sure it's set to Automatic.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
