Microsoft Windows 11

I have no laptop audio - all of a sudden -  and i downloaded "HP Support Assistant 9", but install and setup files didn't work, and the message i received was "A newer version of HP Support Assistant is installed.  Setup will now close" and it ended there without giving me any support towards installing a new audio driver.  So my laptop is still without sound.

Hi @beecp,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your laptop audio and the HP Support Assistant. Let’s tackle the audio problem and the HP Support Assistant installation issue step by step.

1. Check Audio Settings

  • Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Sounds.
  • Under the Playback tab, ensure the correct playback device (like "Speakers") is set as default. If it’s disabled, right-click and enable it.

2. Check Volume Levels

  • Ensure that the volume is turned up and not muted.
  • Check the volume settings within any application you're trying to use for sound.

3. Update Audio Drivers Manually

Device Manager:

  • Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Right-click your audio device (like "Realtek High Definition Audio") and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Uninstall and Reinstall Driver:

  • If updating doesn’t work, right-click the audio device again and select Uninstall device. Restart your laptop, and Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

4. Download Drivers from HP Website

  • Visit the HP support website and enter your laptop model.
  • Navigate to the Drivers section and look for audio drivers. Download and install the latest version available.

5. Fix HP Support Assistant Installation Issue

  • Uninstall Previous Version: Since you’re getting the message about a newer version, try uninstalling the existing version first:
    • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Look for HP Support Assistant and uninstall it.
  • Reinstall: After uninstalling, download the latest version of HP Support Assistant from the HP website.

6. Run the Windows Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  • Click on Additional troubleshooters and select Playing Audio. Run the troubleshooter and follow the prompts.

7. Restart Audio Services

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and select Restart. Make sure it's set to Automatic.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
