Hi @Randyrebel,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand you're having an issue where the sound on your HP Pavilion Laptop PC 15-eg2000 (Product ID: 4U8D7AV) has stopped working, and the volume bar shows muted and cannot be toggled back on, even in Settings. Let's walk through the proper troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Basic Checks

  1. Check the physical mute key:
Your laptop may have a physical mute key on the keyboard (often F6, F8, or with a speaker icon).
➤ Press it once and check if the sound returns.

  2. Plug in and remove headphones:
➤ Try plugging in a headset and removing it — this can reset the audio routing.

Step 2: Restart Windows Audio Services

  1. Press Windows + R → type services.msc → press Enter.
  2. Scroll to Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  3. Right-click each one → Click Restart.

Step 3: Check Sound Output Device

  1. Go to SettingsSystemSound.
  2. Under Output, make sure the correct device (e.g., “Realtek Audio” or “Speakers”) is selected.
  3. Click Test to see if any sound plays.

Step 4: Reinstall the Audio Driver

  1. Right-click the Start button → choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click your audio device (e.g., “Realtek Audio”) → click Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your computer — Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
