HI @markmelodysky,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're not hearing any sound from your laptop, there could be several reasons for this issue, ranging from hardware problems to software settings. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix the sound issue on your laptop:
1. Check Basic Settings
Check Volume Levels:
- Volume Icon: Click on the Volume icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of the screen).
- Ensure Volume is Up: Make sure the volume is not muted and is turned up.
Check Audio Output Device:
- Click Volume Icon: Right-click on the volume icon and select Open Sound settings.
- Select Output Device: Under Output, ensure that the correct audio output device (e.g., speakers, headphones) is selected.
2. Test Different Audio Devices
Test with Headphones:
- Plug in Headphones: Connect a pair of headphones or external speakers to see if you get sound through them.
Test Internal Speakers:
- Disconnect Headphones: If you’re using headphones, disconnect them to check if the internal speakers produce sound.
3. Check Sound Settings
Open Sound Settings:
- Settings Menu: Go to Settings > System > Sound.
- App Volume and Device Preferences: Scroll down to check if the sound settings for apps are configured correctly.
Playback Devices:
- Manage Playback Devices: Right-click on the Volume icon and select Sounds.
- Playback Tab: Go to the Playback tab. Ensure the default device (e.g., speakers or headphones) is set as default and enabled.
4. Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers
Update Drivers:
- Device Manager: Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Update Audio Drivers: Expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click on your audio device, and select Update driver. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Reinstall Drivers:
- Uninstall and Reinstall: In Device Manager, right-click on your audio device, select Uninstall device, then restart your laptop. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.
5. Run Windows Troubleshooter
- Open Troubleshooter:
- Settings Menu: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Run Troubleshooter: Select Playing Audio and run the troubleshooter. Follow the on-screen instructions to detect and fix problems.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
