Hi @Kgp77,
I read the post comprehensively. You've done great troubleshooting, displayed commendable technical skills to isolate the issue. If it is working in Linux at 100% volume, it might be a driver issue. Kudos to you for a job brilliantly done. 🙂 But the speakers could be faulty also.
Perform these steps to uninstall the drivers. The drivers will get automatically installed when you restart the computer. Don't check the box that says delete the software for this device.
- Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers.
- Then restart the computer and check if the situation has been corrected.
If it is not corrected, then update the audio drivers from the manufacturer's website and check again. If it still does not work and you have a copy of windows 7 or Windows 10 please install it and update the bios, chipset and audio drivers from this link: http://hp.com/drivers and follow the on-screen instructions as HP has the drivers for Windows 10 and Windows 7 for this computer. That could do the trick for you. Also follow the steps in the troubleshooting link for audio issues that I have sent you in my previous post.
Finally please contact HP technical support to get the computer serviced.
Trust me I've done everything I can to assist you by keeping your best interest in mind. I hope the unit after repair works great and stays healthy for a long time. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Do take care stay healthy, keep smiling big and have a blessed year ahead. 🙂

Hi @Kgp77,
Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you.
I reviewed the post regarding audio issues with the computer I will be delighted to assist you here.
Splendid description and terrific diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that.
You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you with it. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.
To assist you accurately I would require more information regarding this:
- Did this happen after installing Windows 8.1?
- Did you uninstall the audio drivers from device manager and restart the computer and check again?
This computer came with free Dos according to the product specs link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-15-ay500-notebook-pc-series/12229013/model/13673661/document... of the machine.
So please try these steps:
Uninstall the audio drivers from device manager first:
- Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand sound video and game controllers>then select the sound drivers and right-click on it and uninstall the audio drivers.
- Then restart the computer and check if the situation has been corrected.
- Try connecting a headset now and check if the headset works correctly without low audio. If it does then the speakers are faulty and they need to be replaced or the notebook needs to be repaired by contacting HP tech support.
- If it does not work, then please follow all the prescribed steps from this link: https://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c03257712 for troubleshooting audio related issues.
HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true
- (1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
- (2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
- (3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
- (4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please. Please note that I am not overloading you with a lot of troubleshooting steps. Instead, just like you, I am eager to ensure that the problem gets resolved. So I am providing you with more resources and information at your disposal to deal with the situation better.
Let me know how it goes.

sir
i have one more doubt that
when i logged onto hp and saw my product i realized that hp has only drivers for windows 7 and windows10 and not for my windows 8.1 for this product
so is it that running windows 8.1 on this pc is not good and may create any problem in near future and immediately i should switch to other options
