Welcome to HP Support Community, @mohamed2z.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since the microphone works fine from the Windows settings, the problem is with the communication between the physical key and the operating system.

Here are the steps to fix this.

Reinstall the HP Hotkey Support Driver
This is the most critical step and usually resolves the issue. The function keys require this specific HP driver to work correctly in Windows.

  1. Go to the official HP EliteBook 845 G7 Software and Driver Downloads page.
  2. Expand the "Driver-Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices" category.
  3. Find and download the HP Hotkey Support file.
  4. Alternatively, you can use the direct download link
  5. Run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Restart your computer after the installation is complete.
  7. After restarting, check if the mute button and its LED light are now working.

Update Windows and HP Software.

  1. Ensure both your operating system and HP support software are up to date.
  2. Windows Update: Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. Install all available updates, including any "Optional" updates that mention drivers.
  3. HP Support Assistant: Run the HP Support Assistant tool to check for any other available driver and software updates for your specific laptop.

Update the BIOS.

  1. An outdated BIOS can cause compatibility issues with Windows 11.
  2. On the driver download page, expand the "BIOS-System Firmware" category and download the latest version.
  3. Alternatively, you can use the direct download link.
  4. Important: Make sure your laptop is plugged into the AC adapter before running the BIOS update. Do not turn off the computer during the update process.
  5. Run the installer and let the process complete. The computer will restart automatically.

Run a Keyboard Hardware Test.

  1. If the software solutions above do not work, this final step will test if the key itself is physically working.
  2. Shut down your computer completely.
  3. Press the power button and immediately start tapping the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  4. From the Startup Menu, press the F2 key to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  5. Select Component Tests > Input Devices > Keyboard Test.
  6. Click Run once and follow the instructions to press each key, including the microphone mute key.
  7. If the keypress registers on the screen, the hardware is fine. If it does not register, the key may have a physical fault and the keyboard might have to be replaced.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
