Hi @Pete1173
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like your HP 17 laptop is showing the volume slider when you press the volume buttons, but the actual volume doesn’t change. This issue is often caused by a software or driver conflict. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and hopefully fix the issue:
1. Restart Your Laptop
- Sometimes, a simple restart can solve temporary glitches. If you haven’t already, try restarting your laptop and check if the volume control starts working properly.
2. Check the Sound Settings
- Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Open Sound settings.
- Ensure that the correct output device (e.g., speakers or headphones) is selected and that the volume is not muted.
- In the Advanced Sound Options, check if the volume settings for individual apps are properly adjusted.
3. Update Audio Drivers
- Outdated or corrupted audio drivers can often cause issues with volume control. Here’s how to update your drivers:
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Right-click on your audio device (e.g., Realtek, Conexant) and choose Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- Follow the prompts and restart your laptop once the update is complete.
- Alternatively, visit the HP Support website, find your laptop model, and download the latest audio drivers.
4. Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter
- Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can automatically detect and fix common audio issues:
- Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Troubleshoot sound problems.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to let Windows detect and attempt to fix any audio issues.
5. Check for Windows Updates
- Sometimes, Windows updates can fix bugs related to hardware or system functionality:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install any pending updates.
- Restart your laptop after the updates are installed.
I hope this helps.
