HP Notebook - 14-df0018wm
Ubuntu LTS

Hello everyone,

Recently my old HP laptop 14-df0018wm showed the CMOS checksum error screen again. This happened in August 2024, when I wanted to use it while my current laptop was in repair, and I let the battery discharge fully. A few days later, I tried turning it on, it showed the error.

November 2024: I turn the laptop back on and it completely works. I replaced the default windows 10 installation with Kubuntu. Everything was going smoothly.

Now: I pull the laptop out again and it shows the CMOS checksum error again. One part I left out, is that a few weeks ago, I opened up the laptop to see if I could put an M.2 in it. I get easily startled by BIOS speaker beeps so I took the battery out. When I re-assembled it, I put the battery back in. Also, a plastic piece came off of the battery, but I don't think it mattered. I tried to turn it on yesterday to customize KDE Plasma and it showed the CMOS checksum error again. Am I able to turn it on and have it run like normal? How do I get rid of this error?

@IdkWhyIdid, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

The are two main reasons a BIOS test fails:

The battery on the system board has lost its ability to supply power.

The BIOS was updated incorrectly.

I suggest you refer this guide: HP Desktop PCs - Resolve BIOS ROM or CMOS checksum error | HP® Support

I hope these steps help resolve the issue
