HP Notebook 15-dy1028ca
Microsoft Windows 10 IOT

I have had this notebook for 4 years now. It has been working fine until recently. It crashes a few times everyday. The crashes come all out of the blue. Here is the situation.

The screen suddenly becomes either black with flashing icon size squares, or total black screen with nothing, or dimmed with random color lines flashing. The laptop is not responding at all. I have to cold boot it.

I checked the Event Viewer under the Application tab. There were errors whenever the laptop crashes. The 2 error messages were: WorkflowAppControl with Event ID 65535 and USPAppControl with Event ID 65535 or 0.

I Googled it and found out these apps are related to Brother printer software (which had been working fine for a year). I uninstalled the software. Updated the laptop BIOS to the latest one. The laptop worked properly for a couple of days.

Same situation appeared again. I checked the Event Viewer again. The above mentioned errors were not there. Under the System tab, whenever the crashes appeared, there was a service SECOMN not responding error and A timeout was reached (45000 milliseconds) while waiting for the SECOMNService service to connect.. Not sure if this is the cause of the crashes.

BTW, I had scanned the hard drive with Windows sfc tool and tested memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic tool. All didn't report any problem.

I would really appreciate if someone could help solve this issue.

Hi @Irwin6,

Thanks for your reply. I tried to shutdown and start, I was not able to get to the Startup menu after pressing ESC key. I googled about it, some people said the F2 key. I tried it, it didn't work neither. Is there any way to get into this menu?

I googled the HP diagnostic software, there is one that runs inside Windows. Is it the same one?

Could you please advise? Thank you in advance.
