Hi
Having received a 601 message when booting up for the past couple of days, I today replaced the small lithium 3v battery in my notebook. CR2032 is the battery model (like a large watch battery). However I am still receiving the 601 message when I reboot.
I have read elsewhere on the forum that people should consider updating their BIOS. But I am reluctant to do so for a couple of reasons:
1) I have read online that doing this incorrectly can "brick" your computer.
2) I believe my PC is up to date as I have HP Support Assistant, and this is not new to my PC.
I attach a screen shot showing that HP Support Assistant has no new updates available (because it's up to date, I believe). The image also shows the results of an HP battery check. Despite me replacing the small battery today I am being told: Primary battery Very Weak.
It is my hunch that it is actually the large battery that clips on/off the outside of the notebook that is weak, as I have noticed that the charge doesn't last very long these days. I am also aware of the comments made by "RedKiteSoaring" which would suggest there may be a lack of clarity on which battery the PC is really having a problem with: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Boot-up-error-quot-Primary-Int... .
If my hunch is correct - that I need to replace the large battery- how important is this considering I usually use my notebook plugged in to the mains? If my hunch is not correct, why would I still be getting the message when I boot up?
I look forward to your replies.

Yes you can leave the battery out at times.
But do put it in every once in a while.

You are correct it is the larger main battery.
Power down the laptop and remove the main battery.
Power-on laptop does the error go away???

Thanks for the prompt reply REO. Yes that does the trick, so it proves your point.
It didn't ocurr to me that the notebook would work without the battery being in place- I assumed the current needed to run through it. Apparently not! So I could have presumably preseved the battery all the time i was plugged into the mains by removing it. Am I correct in assuming the battery slowly weakens over time even when the notebook is attached to the mains?
Also, if I do decide to replace this battery, I see there are different Pavillion DV6 batteries when I google them. How do I know if I have say, a DV6 1100 or a DV6 6000?
