Hello,

I bought a used HP Elitebook 840 G5 on ebay, but when i try enter bios its protected by password.

Is it possible to get it reset somehow?

Basically NO -- which is one of the main reasons I advise folks AGAINST buying used laptops.

 

The BIOS password is encrypted in the firmware contained in a chip on the system board.  That chip is not socketed, so it can not be replaced.  You have to replace the entire system board and that generally costs more than simply replacing the laptop.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer. But i saw few people getting custom .smc-files to reset password. That is not possible anymore or what? I still have 7 months warranty left on the device.
