Every time Windows applies an update during the night, I find the computer running, system is warm (indicating running long time), and the screen is black. I am unable to get it to respond, and have to hold power button for extended time to shut it off, then reboot fine.
The reliability monitor will only show two things: successful windows update, and Windows was not properly shut down (which I am presuming it is becasue of my holding power and turning off.)
I'm on 1709. I've update all drivers from HP and from Intel. I've run diags and not found any issues.
Any thougts?

Yeah -- v1709 is LONG out of support by HP. In fact, they were just about to pull support for 1809 when they relented and extended support several more months due to the Pandemic.
You need to SERIOUSLY think about upgrading the PC to v1909 so you will get current security updates.
If you want to do that, then post back and I'll provide some instructions.

OK ... then my guess is that the problem is related to Fast Startup.
Win10 has enabled a new hibernation process known as Fast Startup -- which is enabled BY DEFAULT. This is different from Fast Boot, which is a BIOS/UEFI option.
Fast Startup is supposed to dramatically speed up the booting process, but in some PCs, it actually slows it down or causes it to hang. It's also a new form of hibernation known as hybrid sleep -- and this causes battery drain to maintain the state of the PC while turned off.
Disabling Fast Startup might fix the booting problem.
There are two ways to disable FastStartup in Win10: (1) through the Control Panel, and (2) through an elevated command prompt.
Control Panel - Open Control Panel --> Power Options.
Select "Choose what the power buttons do"
Select "Change settings that are currently unavailable"
At the bottom of the Window, under Shutdown settings, uncheck the box regarding fast startup
Elevated command prompt - run the following command:
REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power" /V HiberbootEnabled /T REG_dWORD /D 0 /F
In both cases, reboot Windows.
NOW, FastStartup is disabled.
See if that helps.

I really appreciate your input.
However, that is one option I had seen as a possibility and it is off. I just double checked, and yes, it is off.
To be sure there is no confusion: I have not been thinking it is a startup problem, but maybe it is...ONLY when it auto starts to do a Windows Update.
Here's a bit more information: Looking at the reliability monitor , like below...
I had been thinking that it was failing during the update install during previous morning. Studying the times though I'm not surew what to think.
For example, on the highlighted one, the time of the "Windowos was not properly shut down" error was at 9:22 a.m., and the update was at 9:25 a.m....after the hard shut down I had to do and restart.
But maybe it is noted there as after that reboot because it failed to sleep correctly when it was applied during the night, and so it noted it after the successful reboot. I don't know...
But to be sure there is not confusion: When I get up in the morning, the labtop is running, screen shut. I open the screen to be greeted with a black screen which never comes on. So I hold in the power button until it shuts off, then reboot.
It definitely is related to the Windows Update, as that is the only time this happens, is when there is an update involved.

Just a quick update:
I turned off Windows Update yesterday.
I got up this morning, and again it was in the running/black screen state. No updates had come down.
So, I have no idea what is booting it nor why it is locking to a black screen.
