Hi @Davenny,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A black screen issue after entering your password on a Pavilion laptop can be due to various reasons including software glitches, display issues, or hardware malfunctions. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:
Force Restart: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix the issue. Hold down the power button for about 10 seconds to turn off the laptop, then press it again to turn it back on.
Safe Mode Boot: Booting in Safe Mode can help you troubleshoot if the issue is caused by software or drivers.
- Restart your laptop and repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8) before the Windows logo appears to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
- Select "Safe Mode" and press Enter. If your laptop boots successfully in Safe Mode, you can perform further diagnostics or restore your system.
External Display Check: Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV to check if the display is the issue. If the external display works, your laptop's screen might be the problem.
Update or Rollback Drivers: If you manage to boot in Safe Mode, updating or rolling back graphics drivers might help.
- Go to Device Manager, find Display Adapters, and right-click on your graphics card.
- Choose "Update driver" or "Roll back driver" if a recent update might have caused the issue.
System Restore: If you suspect a recent change caused the issue, performing a system restore can help. In Safe Mode:
- Go to Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.
- Follow the prompts to choose a restore point before the issue began.
Check for Overheating: Overheating can cause the system to crash. Ensure the laptop is not hot to the touch and that vents are not blocked.
Hardware Diagnostics: HP Pavilion laptops usually come with a built-in diagnostics tool. To run it, turn off your laptop, then turn it on and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly until you see the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI menu. Run the system tests to check for hardware issues.
BIOS Reset: Resetting the BIOS to its default settings can sometimes resolve issues.
- Turn off the laptop, turn it back on, and immediately press the key to enter BIOS setup (usually F10, but it can vary).
- Look for an option to reset to default settings, save changes, and exit.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
