HP 15-dy2791wm laptop with BIOS F.36 Rev.A (sp155081.exe) installed.  All hardware and software on this laptop (or even no software at all, if I'm doing a clean install) works just fine, with one exception.

When trying to boot into a BIOS screen, e.g., F1 for System Info, F2 for diagnostics, F9 to change boot device order (if I want to boot up with from an external drive), or F10 to access BIOS Setup Utility, the BIOS apparently always selects the external HDMI port for display, even when no external display is connected to that HDMI port.  It ****NEVER**** uses the laptop's built-in display (which works just fine otherwise and isn't broken or damaged, so don't tell me to run diagnostics on it), and just sits there blank whenever I try to boot into a BIOS screen using F1, F2, F9, or F10 with no external display connected.

And since the BIOS Setup Utility on the 15-dy2791wm apparently provides no way to configure what display the BIOS uses at initial boot (built-in or external/HDMI), I'm forced to connect an external display to the HDMI port whenever I want to use F1, F2, F9, or F10 in order to access any of the associated BIOS screens and functions.

How stupid is that?

Hi @ScreenName134 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP 15-dy0000 laptop defaulting to the external HDMI port for BIOS and other early boot screens, even when no external monitor is connected, which can be frustrating. This issue may stem from a setting in the BIOS or a behavior associated with the system firmware (BIOS).

Unfortunately, as you've noted, there isn't a straightforward option in the BIOS to configure which display the system uses during boot. Here are a few suggestions to try to resolve the issue:

BIOS Update: Even though you already have BIOS F.36 Rev.A, it’s worth checking if there’s a newer BIOS version available. HP occasionally releases updates to address hardware compatibility issues. You can check the official HP support page for your model and download any available updates.

BIOS Reset: Sometimes a BIOS reset to default settings can resolve display issues during boot. You can do this by:

  • Rebooting your laptop and pressing F10 to access the BIOS setup.
  • In the BIOS menu, look for an option to Reset to Default Settings (often under the "Exit" or "Save & Exit" tab).
  • Save the changes and exit. This will reset the BIOS to its default settings and might help with the display issue.

External Display Disconnection During Boot: If your laptop automatically defaults to the HDMI output during boot, try disconnecting the HDMI cable immediately after powering on the laptop and before entering the BIOS or boot options. Some laptops might revert to the built-in display once the external monitor is removed.

Hardware Reset (EC Reset): Perform a full hardware reset to clear any temporary issues with the system firmware:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and any connected external devices.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and power on the laptop.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for reply.   In short re your suggestions, been there, done that (and more).

1. Bios F.36 Rev. A is the latest on HP's website for 15-dy2791wm.  But in addition to resetting to the defaults, I also re-flashed the F.36 version (in HP's infinite wisdom, you can't revert).

2. Disconnecting HDMI cable immediately after reboot:  you can either disconnect before the (rebooted) machine connects to the moniitor (as indicated by the monitor's signal status light), in which case it is as if the monitor was never connected.  Or you can disconnect after the machine connects, in which the BIOS screen will be waiting on that display if you plug the display back in.  In either case, disconnecting the cable does not revert the BIOS screen to the laptop display.

One of two things must be true:

Either HP/AMI thoroughly tested BIOS F.36 Rev A on the 15-dy2791wm and something just happens to be special about my particular 15-dy2791wm laptop,

OR

They didn't, in which case that BIOS F.36 Rev A should not be appearing for download for the the 15-dy2791wm.
