Hi

I tried to update my Windows 11 Home to version 25H2 but it keeps rolling back after installation.  Determined that the BIOS was too old, so installed the F.38 BIOS.  However, after over 48 hours (and many cold boots) am still getting an Event 1801 upon boot, thus indicating that it has not committed.  Any ideas?

Hi @visibletech,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Event 1801 after a BIOS update means the update was staged but not committed to NVRAM, so the system keeps prompting at boot. This can happen if:

  • The BIOS update was applied from Windows, but didn’t finalize during reboot.
  • Secure Boot or BitLocker interfered with the commit process.
  • The update requires HP’s UEFI environment to complete.

Steps to Fix BIOS Commit Issue on HP Spectre x360

  1. Confirm Current BIOS Version
    • Press Esc → F10 at startup.
    • Check if it shows F.38 or the older version.

  2. Force BIOS Update via HP UEFI
  3. Disable BitLocker Before Update
    • In Windows, search Manage BitLockerSuspend protection.
    • This prevents rollback during commit.

  4. Reset BIOS Settings
    • Enter BIOS (F10) → Load Setup Defaults → Save & Exit.
    • Then retry the update.

  5. Clear CMOS (Optional)
    • If commit still fails, power off → hold Power + Volume Down for 15 seconds (on Spectre models) to clear NVRAM.

If It Still Fails

  • The rollback during the Windows 25H2 upgrade suggests the BIOS commit is blocking the OS install.
  • Contact HP Support for a BIOS recovery image or service if the update won’t finalize.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @VikramTheGreat

Thanks for your response.

Step 1 shows current BIOS version as F.38.  However, I am still seeing 1801 (and there is no event 2023 to be seen).

I couldn't download the latest BIOS (F.38) again because, from the link, it kept bouncing back to the Welcome page.  However, I still had the downloaded BIOS from the beginning of the week.

Following the steps in *2), I get the message, "The selected BIOS image is not available" when I try to do the BIOS Update step.

Not sure why things are going askew.

Regards

Hi @VikramTheGreat

Thank you for your response.

I would like to clarify the current situation, as I am unable to complete the steps you suggested.

• The BIOS has already been successfully updated and is running version F.38, as confirmed by msinfo32 and the BIOS setup screen.
• When I follow your instructions to Firmware Management → BIOS Update, the firmware reports “The selected BIOS image is not available.” There is no BIOS image listed to select.
• This indicates that the installed BIOS does not retain a UEFI-callable capsule image, so the update cannot be re-applied from Firmware Management on this model.

Separately, Windows has staged a Secure Boot certificate update, but it has not been committed by the firmware:
• Event Viewer shows Event ID 1801 (“Secure Boot certificates have been updated but are not yet applied to the device firmware”).
Event ID 1808 never appears, even after multiple cold boots.
• A direct firmware database check using PowerShell confirms that the new certificate is not present.

Because the BIOS update is installed but cannot be re-applied from UEFI, and the Secure Boot certificates are never committed, Windows 11 version 25H2 consistently rolls back during upgrade.

My question is therefore:

Does BIOS version F.38 for the HP Spectre x360 13-ae055na support committing the Microsoft Secure Boot certificate update, or is a newer BIOS version required to enable this?

If F.38 does not support this functionality, I would appreciate confirmation so I can determine the correct next steps.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi @visibletech,

Thank you for getting back and letting me know that you still have trouble. I would request you to just try a BIOS restore on the pc first, and try the steps, and let me know how it goes.

BIOS Restore:
1) Shut down the computer, keep the charger plugged in
2) Hold down the Windows and B buttons together while the computer is still turned off.
3) Turn on the computer and continue to hold the Windows and B buttons until a BIOS Recovery screen appears.
4) Follow the on-screen instructions and click on OK.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
