HP Pavilion 13 x2 PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm trying to update the BIOS (current version F.29) on my notebook as recommended by HP.  The new version recommended is version F.2A Rev.A  - "HP strongly recommends transitioning promptly to this updated BIOS version".

However, when I download and run the SP77040.exe file, I get a message below saying "Copy Process Failed!" with the filename: 'XXX Z:\EFI\HP\BIOS\New\0215B.bin XXXXX' (the X's in the filename are chinese characters)

Could this mean that my Bios has been hijacked and can this be fixed?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @MikeHz

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post.

Could you post your full produce model and product number (as described here)  >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108 ?

Personally, I do not recommend you update the BIOS unless you experience some issues with your existing BIOS and you are sure that the new BIOS will fix it.

General recommendation I provide to users/customers is NOT to upgrade BIOS/UEFI unless they experience any kind of specific BIOS/UEFI issue. Updating just for updaing and just for using the latest verson is not solution. Any kind of update (no matter for what and who relesed it) can fix 2 issues but may introduce 10 more issues. Additionally, upgrading the BIOS (for any vendor) poses more risks because BIOS recovery is not that easy as compared to typical software updates IF something goes wrong.

Same applies for Windows Updates, OS update, drivers updates, etc - upgrade/update IF you have issues which you know are fixed in the newer version or for some severe security issues. Otherwise, keep the existing version as long as possible.

** With regards the specific issue you experiece and your question - if you still insist on updating it :

No, the update hasn't been hacked/hijacked.

What is device/partition Z: ?  Is it a removable media drive (e.g. USB pen drive) ?

Can you follow the update method via USB device as mentioned here >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00042629

Updating the BIOS when Windows does not start (Windows 10, 8, 7)

Looking forward to your update.

Hi @IT_WinSec

First, thanks for the quick response!

Here is the information you requested:

Product name: HP Pavilion 13 x2 PC
     Product number: E9G95UA#ABA
     Serial number: (removed content)
     Motherboard ID: 2199

The Z:\ drive is NOT removable storage.  It's a partition on the internal hard drive I believe.  I never knew it existed until I went to update the BIOS.  It doesn't even show up on the Windows File Explorer.

I will try the update via the USB device method, however which BIOS image file should I use?  There are two BIOS image files placed on the USB:  0215A.bin and 0215B.bin.  Also, neither of these BIOS update files match the System Board ID which is 2199...

Thanks again.

Hi,

The message you encountered initially appears because you (and the utility) did not have access rights to store information on Z:\ partition, thuse the error.

As the motherboard does not match the ID, I advise you skip the update.

Is the computer experiencing some BIOS issue the new version claims to fix? If not, an incorrect BIOS installation can have unpleasant outcomes.

I confirm that inside the suggested sp77040.exe there are two files which both does not match your board ID which you write is 2199
