A BIOS update was done on my laptop but it failed and bricked my motherboard. Could not even get it to turn on. I replaced the motherboard and as soon as I turned the laptop on it began to update the BIOS again with the same result. I have again replaced the motherboard and set up a fresh SSD and all is fine. But I need to put my original SSD back in but I am terrified that the BIOS update will kick in again. I have a caddy and can see my original SSD. What files do I need to delete or adjust to stop a BIOS update initiating?

Hi @Q_S,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing. BIOS updates are sensitive operations, and ensuring proper installation is crucial to avoid hardware issues.

To prevent the BIOS update from kicking in again when you use your original SSD, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Check for BIOS Update Files:

  • Use your caddy to access the original SSD from another operating system.
  • Look for any specific files that might be setup files for the BIOS update.

Disable Automatic Updates:

  • Before reinserting the SSD, ensure that any settings related to automatic updates (BIOS, driver updates) in your operating system are disabled.
  • This varies based on whether you’re using tools provided by HP Support Assistant or other utilities.

BIOS Setup Utility:

  • Ensure the new motherboard has the most current BIOS that is stable and matches your hardware specifications.

Firmware and System Files:

  • There could be System Management BIOS (SMBIOS) settings or OEM specific tools that attempt to manage updates.
  • Ensure these are set to not automatically apply updates or are removed prior to placing the SSD back in the laptop.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi,

Many thanks for your reply. Everything that you have said I agree with. What I am trying to find out is how the update process is initiated. Is it a command in a boot file or or hidden in the UEFI partition. Most BIOS updates involve a .bin file and a program to install it. Where is the default location for these after running the downloaded file? If you could help with this, that would be fantastic.

Thx
