HP Laptop Probook 440

Dear All / HP Support.

We currently are asked by clients we manage to update BIOS. It was said that BIOS needs to be updated once in a while to keep the devices secure.

We can update the BIOS but the risk of doing it remotely is quite impactful, the risk of doing the BIOS updates remotely involves things that cannot be fixed remotely.

While our client's device is spread over a lot of locations, we also simply did not have the resources to update the BIOS directly on the device.

Questions :

1. Do we have a way to Update BIOS safely for HP devices remotely?

2. If we don't have a way to update the BIOS remotely, by recommendation of HP, should we update the BIOS or not?

Thank you.

We get posts here every day about folks doing ROUTINE BIOS updates and ending up with a nonworking laptop as a result.

In my own experience doing this over many years, I always used the option to do a backup of the current BIOS firmware to a USB stick so that I could boot into a BIOS recovery mode and restore the working version if the update fails.

But in modern laptops, I don't even see an option of doing this backup. So, if the update fails, which it appears to do from time to time, and a BIOS recovery does not work, the machine just got trashed.

Even if it were possible, the opportunity for trashing computers by doing this remotely scares me -- and I would not do it.

But others here may have different opinions on this, and if they do, I am sure they will present that to you.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
I also afraid that would happen by doing bios updates remotely,

Actually, I posted on this forum to get opinions from HP as well regarding on this. At least it will help to boost our reason to not doing this by remote, even doing it directly have risks on doing it while the device is still in use for works.

I hope I can get HP to comment on this topics.

HP does not have an official presence on this forum, so you are not going to get any official position from HP here.
