HP Pavillon DV6-6170US
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, my notebook is a hp dv6-6170us. When I press the ON button only with the battery, the battery LED blinks 3 times and the notebook does not turn on. If I press the power button with the charger connected, the battery LED is lit solid white and the notebook does not turn on. This error is intermittent. I spend a few days unable to connect it and sometimes I can connect it. The battery is still working normally. I wonder if anyone can tell me what may be happening with my notebook.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas on behalf of HP.

I came across your post and would like to help. I understand that you have an HP Pavilion dv6-6170us Entertainment and it does not power on and boot to Windows.

Following are the observations I have made through your post:

  • If there is a steady light at the place where the charger connects to the laptop, then it indicates that the charger is fine.
  • The battery LED blinks 3 times because the battery has drained out and does not charge.

Meanwhile, I did some research and suggest you to perform the following steps:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Remove the battery out. If the battery is integrated and does not have a latch to release it then leave the battery inside the laptop.
  • Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter. Try connecting the charger to a good known wall outlet.
  • Power ON the laptop.

If the place where the charger connects to the laptop has no light then it could be either because the charger is bad or a motherboard failure.

Secondly, you may remove the battery out and connect only the charger. This way try to power on the laptop using only the charger. Likewise, disconnect the charger and connect only the battery and see if it power on.

Hope this information helps. Let me know how it goes. Good luck! 🙂

Merry Christmas for you too. Thanks for the response and the attention. This procedure you asked me to do, I already did and I did not succeed. Let me try to explain it again. When I try to connect my notebook only with the battery and without the AC adapter is connected, the battery LED blinks 3 times, no other light flashes or the beep happens and my notebook does not turn on. When I unplug the battery from the notebook and try to connect it only with the AC adapter, the battery led is blinking white, but the notebook does not turn on.

You're most welcome. I truly appreciate your efforts.

I have reviewed your inputs thoroughly. The evidence points towards a hardware failure (Motherboard). Hence I suggest you to contact our HP phone support team to check the available service options for your HP laptop.

Hope this helps. Feel free to keep me posted for any further questions. All the best! 🙂

Hello, I actually had to replace the motherboard of my hp dv6-6170us notebook, but when I went to do the hd recovery using the recovery dvds, a message appears saying that it is not compatible with my notebook. How can I do factory reset of my hd? Thank you.
