I have noticed that regardless of whether my new laptop has a charger plugged in or not (I've tried two different applicable HP chargers) the chargiung icon still shows as the battery as charging but the battery is slowly degrading and not fully charging. The white light next to the power input is also constantly blinking regardless of whether there is a charger plugged in or not...can anyone help?

Hi @AJK58,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your laptop’s battery indicator shows as charging even when no charger is plugged in, and the battery is degrading or not fully charging, it could be a sign of a few potential issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this problem:
**1. Perform a Hard Reset
Power Off Laptop:
- Turn off your laptop completely.
Disconnect Power and Remove Battery:
- Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery if it is removable.
Discharge Residual Power:
- Press and hold the power button for about 15-30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
Reinsert Battery and Power Adapter:
- Reinsert the battery (if applicable) and reconnect the power adapter.
Power On Laptop:
- Turn on your laptop and check if the issue persists.
**2. Check Battery and Charger
Inspect Battery and Charger:
- Check the battery and charger for any visible damage or issues. Ensure the charger is compatible with your laptop model.
Try a Different Charger:
- If possible, use another compatible HP charger to rule out issues with the charger.
Inspect Power Port:
- Examine the power port on your laptop for any loose connections or damage.
**3. Update BIOS and Drivers
Update BIOS:
- Visit the HP Support website and search for your laptop model.
- Download and install the latest BIOS update available for your model.
Update Battery Drivers:
- Open Device Manager (search for it in the Start menu).
- Expand the Batteries section.
- Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Update Driver.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to search for and install any updates.
**4. Calibrate the Battery
Fully Charge the Battery:
- Connect the power adapter and fully charge the battery to 100%.
Discharge the Battery:
- Disconnect the power adapter and use the laptop until the battery is completely discharged and the laptop shuts down.
Recharge Battery:
- Connect the power adapter and fully charge the battery again to 100%.
**5. Check Battery Health
Use Battery Report Tool:
- On Windows, open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. This will generate a battery report file in the specified location.
- Open the report to check the battery health and charge cycles.
Battery Health Diagnostics:
- Some HP laptops come with built-in battery diagnostics tools in the BIOS. Restart your laptop and access the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F2 or Esc during startup) and check for battery diagnostics or tests.
**6. Check Power Settings
Open Power Options:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
Adjust Settings:
- Ensure that power settings are configured correctly and that there are no settings affecting charging behavior.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
