Setup bitlocker on my spectre x360 and while it was 15% through encrypting the drive my computer flashed an error message and said it had to restart. Upon restart I get the bitlocker screen, enter my pin and the I get a plain black screen and nothing happens. Is there any way I can reboot with or without bitlocker? Running windows 11 pro.

Hi @Grove245,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel how unsettling it must be to see your HP Spectre x360 go dark right in the middle of BitLocker encryption, especially when you were doing everything right to protect your data. Let’s walk through this together.

Steps to Recover Your System

Step 1: Confirm You Have the BitLocker Recovery Key

You’ll need this to proceed. You can find it:

  • In your Microsoft account: Sign in to your account
  • On a USB drive, if you saved it there.
  • Printed or saved as a file during BitLocker setup.

Step 2: Create a Windows 11 Bootable USB

Since your system won’t boot, you’ll need another computer to create recovery media:

Step 3: Boot from USB and Access Recovery Tools

  1. Insert the USB into your Spectre x360.
  2. Power on and press Esc repeatedly → then F9 to select boot device.
  3. Choose the USB drive.
  4. On the Windows setup screen, click “Repair your computer” (bottom left).
  5. Try:
    • Startup Repair
    • Command Prompt: Run bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /scanos, and bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • System Restore (if available)

If these fail, you may need to reinstall Windows, but you’ll need to decrypt the drive first using your recovery key.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
