HP 15s-fq1000 Laptop PC (7BJ15AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP laptop encountered an issue upon turning it on, I was greeted with a black screen and a blinking caps lock light. The blinking pattern was three slow blinks followed by two fast blinks. I attempted various troubleshooting steps including creating a BIOS recovery USB drive, however, none of these actions resolved the problem or provided an option to boot into BIOS recovery. I'm using an HP 15-dy1xxx laptop model.
Please is there any other way I can get around this issue?

Hi @Gabbystarks,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing a black screen with blinking caps lock LED lights on your HP 15s-Fq1000 laptop, it typically indicates a hardware issue. The specific blink pattern you mentioned (3 slow blinks followed by 2 fast blinks) is often associated with a memory (RAM) problem. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Perform a hard reset: Disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery (if possible), and then press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. This action helps to discharge any residual power and can sometimes resolve temporary hardware glitches.
  • Reseat the memory modules: Turn off your laptop, disconnect the power, and remove the battery (if possible). Locate the memory module compartment on the bottom of the laptop (refer to your user manual for the exact location). Open the compartment, remove the memory modules, and then reinsert them firmly. Make sure they are properly seated in their slots.
  • Test with one memory module at a time: If your laptop has multiple memory modules, try removing one of them and test if the laptop boots up. If the problem persists, replace the removed module and try removing the other one. This step helps identify if one of the memory modules is faulty.
  • Check for loose connections: Open the laptop's back panel and ensure all internal connections, such as cables and connectors, are securely in place. Carefully reseat any loose connections you find.
  • Update BIOS: Visit the HP support website, enter your laptop model, and download the latest BIOS update available for your specific model. Follow the instructions provided by HP to update the BIOS. Sometimes, a BIOS update can address certain hardware issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
