Caps lock is blinking 5 long 3 short. I have tried the suggestions to recover the computer. Is there any chance of saving my files that are on the laptop? It's a:

Hi,

First, I recommend removing the serial number from the public post for privacy.

A Caps Lock blink code of 5 long and 3 short usually points to a serious BIOS / Embedded Controller / system board initialization problem. If BIOS recovery and the normal recovery steps have already failed, the laptop may need motherboard-level service.

Regarding your files: there is still a good chance they can be saved, because your personal files are stored on the internal hard drive/SSD, not on the motherboard.

For your HP 15-dw0037wm, the next step would be data recovery from the internal drive:

  1. Do not reset or reinstall Windows.
  2. Do not format the drive.
  3. Remove the internal storage drive from the laptop.
  4. Connect it to another working computer using the correct USB adapter/enclosure.
  5. Copy your files from the user folders, such as:
    • Desktop
    • Documents
    • Downloads
    • Pictures
    • Videos

One important note: if BitLocker or device encryption was enabled, you may need the BitLocker recovery key to access the files. You can check your Microsoft account for the recovery key here:

https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey

If the drive is detected on another computer, your files should usually be recoverable. If the drive is not detected or makes unusual clicking sounds, then stop testing and contact a professional data recovery service.

In short: the laptop itself may need repair, but your files may still be recoverable by removing the internal drive and connecting it to another computer.

Can these files be moved to a cell phone with a SD card in it?

  1. "Connect it to another working computer using the correct USB adapter/enclosure.
  2. Copy your files from the user folders, such as:
    • Desktop
    • Documents
    • Downloads
    • Pictures
    • Videos"
