Hi @Thebird13,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A failed BIOS update can cause the laptop to be stuck in a black screen state, as it might not be initializing properly. Since you've already tried several recovery steps, let's go through some additional steps and clarify the best way to approach BIOS recovery.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the charger (leave the battery out, if removable) and try turning the laptop back on.

BIOS Recovery Using HP’s Key Combination

  • Ensure your laptop is completely off.
  • Press and hold Windows + B (or Windows + V) keys.
  • While holding the keys, press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds, then release the power button while continuing to hold Windows + B or Windows + V.
  • Wait for about a minute. If the BIOS recovery screen appears, follow the instructions to restore the BIOS.

Try an External Display

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI or VGA.
  • Power on the laptop to check if the issue is with the built-in screen. If the external display works, the BIOS update might have changed some display settings.

Use the USB BIOS Recovery Method

  • Prepare the USB Drive:
    1. On a working computer, go to the HP Software and Drivers website.
    2. Enter your laptop model and download the BIOS file.
    3. Use the HP BIOS Update utility to create a BIOS recovery USB drive.
  • Recover BIOS from USB:
    1. Insert the USB drive into the affected laptop.
    2. Press Windows + B and power on the laptop.
    3. Wait for the BIOS recovery process to complete.

Reset CMOS (If Applicable)

  • If your laptop has a removable CMOS battery, disconnect it and wait for about 5–10 minutes before reconnecting it. This might reset the BIOS settings.

Attempt Blind BIOS Update

  • Sometimes, the laptop may update BIOS in the background even without a display. To do this:
    1. Insert the USB with the BIOS file.
    2. Power on the laptop and leave it for 10–15 minutes.
    3. Check if it restarts automatically.

Note:

  • Make sure the BIOS files you are using match your laptop’s exact model number.
  • Avoid interrupting the recovery or update process once it begins.
  • If the USB BIOS recovery doesn’t work, you may need a replacement motherboard or BIOS chip reprogramming.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi,

This is the summary of the result :

Perform a Hard Reset : Don't work

BIOS Recovery Using HP’s Key Combination : Don't Work

Try an External Display : External display don't works

Use the USB BIOS Recovery Method : don't work

Reset CMOS (If Applicable) : I will open the laptop tomorrow to verify if the mother board have it.  Anyway, I will need to open it to take the SSD drive to find some critical files on it.

Hi @Thebird13,

Thank you for your response,

It seems like you’ve already tried all the typical troubleshooting steps for resolving the black screen issue after a BIOS update. Since the issue began after the BIOS update from HP Support Assistant, it's possible the update was interrupted or not applied properly, causing a corruption.

Since the steps you've already tried have not worked, here are some additional advanced troubleshooting steps:

Check for a faulty motherboard or BIOS chip:

If the above steps haven't worked and you're unable to proceed with BIOS recovery, there may be an issue with the motherboard or the BIOS chip itself. A corrupted BIOS chip might need reprogramming or replacement. It may be worth consulting an HP-certified repair center to check and possibly reprogram the BIOS chip.

Use the "Blind" BIOS Update Recovery Again (Extended Duration):

  • Prepare the USB BIOS recovery drive: Make sure you're using the correct BIOS file for your exact laptop model.
  • Steps:
    1. Insert the USB with the BIOS update file into the laptop.
    2. Power on the laptop and leave it running for 10-15 minutes (you may not see the display, but it might still be doing the update in the background).
    3. After waiting, perform a hard reset by pressing and holding the power button for 10-15 seconds.
    4. Try powering on the laptop again.
    5. If the update process succeeds, the laptop should automatically restart after the recovery.

Check BIOS Settings for Display Configuration:

  • If the internal screen is still not working but you're able to get an external display to work, try to reset display settings via the BIOS recovery process (if you can manage to get into the BIOS menu using an external display).
  • Ensure the display options (e.g., internal/external display) are set correctly.

Check for Advanced CMOS/RTC Reset:

  • If your laptop has a removable CMOS battery, disconnect it and leave it out for 10-20 minutes before reconnecting it. This should reset the BIOS and any power-related settings that might be affecting the display.
  • If the laptop doesn't have a removable CMOS battery, you may need to locate the RTC reset pins (refer to your laptop’s manual or motherboard schematic for these details). Shorting these pins can help reset the BIOS.

Consider Performing a System Restore or Clean Installation (Using Recovery Media):

  • If you have created recovery media, you could try booting from it and performing a System Restore to a point before the BIOS update was applied. This may restore the laptop to a working state.
  • If a System Restore doesn’t work, you may need to perform a clean installation of Windows. However, this would be a last resort, as it may cause data loss unless you can recover important files from your SSD first.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,

Thank you very much for your help

Check for a faulty motherboard or BIOS chip: I tried this and no result

Check BIOS Settings for Display Configuration: I tried this and no result

Check for Advanced CMOS/RTC Reset: I tried this and no result

Consider Performing a System Restore or Clean Installation (Using Recovery Media):  I will need more details because I can not change the bios to start with my USB key.  I can restart my computer and lost all datas if needed
