Hello, I’m having issues with a black screen before booting.
cause: was using a heavy CAD software and the computer completely froze, mouse wouldn’t move, wouldn’t turn off when the screen would close like normal. Held the power button to restart the computer and now this is the issue. This issue magically disappeared twice, once a few weeks ago and once today but is happening again very shortly after the fix. There are no flashing lights, fans are on like normal, one white light on the power, for a few seconds after power on I get a white light on the disks, and amber on the charge port.
When hitting ESC on boot up it takes ~2 minutes for something to happen, once that screen comes up nothing further can be done. Pressing Shift B multiple times after power BOIS comes up saying corrupted, this happened once without beeps, after letting it sit for 15 minutes it worked but I cannot repeat that.
I know there’s a solution to this, any advice?

Hi @NShaw17,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a corrupted BIOS or hardware-level issue, possibly triggered by a system freeze during heavy CAD usage. The fact that the issue temporarily resolves and then returns suggests an intermittent BIOS or motherboard fault, possibly related to: BIOS corruption or instability, Failing SSD or RAM, Overheating or power delivery issues, GPU driver or hardware failure
Let’s walk through a structured recovery approach:
1. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the laptop.
- Unplug the charger and remove any external devices.
- Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
- Plug the charger back in and try powering on.
2. Try BIOS Recovery (Windows + B)
- With the laptop off, press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
- Release all keys. If successful, the BIOS recovery screen should appear.
- Let it sit for a few minutes, even if the screen is black — sometimes it takes time.
⚠️ If you hear beeps or see the screen flicker, that’s a good sign the BIOS recovery is working.
3. Use External Monitor (if available)
- Connect to an external monitor via HDMI or USB-C.
- This helps rule out a display failure.
4. Reseat RAM and SSD (if comfortable)
- Power off and open the back panel.
- Carefully remove and reinsert the RAM and SSD.
This can resolve issues caused by loose connections or static buildup.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
