Hi @McGoon,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue of a black screen following the cursor can be frustrating. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve this problem on your HP Spectre x360 running Windows 11:
Steps to Resolve Black Screen Following Cursor Issue:
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date. Visit the HP support website and download the latest drivers for your specific model.
- Alternatively, you can update the graphics driver via Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Display adapters section.
- Right-click your graphics card and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Disable Pointer Trails:
- Sometimes, enabling pointer trails can cause graphical issues. To disable this:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Select Additional mouse settings.
- In the Mouse Properties window, go to the Pointer Options tab.
- Uncheck the Display pointer trails option and click Apply then OK.
Adjust Display Settings:
- Incorrect display settings can also cause this issue. Try adjusting the screen resolution and refresh rate:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Display.
- Under Scale & layout, ensure the recommended resolution is selected.
- Scroll down and click on Advanced display settings to check and adjust the refresh rate if necessary.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Make sure your Windows 11 is fully updated:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update and click Check for updates.
- Install any available updates and restart your laptop.
Run Hardware Diagnostics:
- Use HP’s built-in diagnostics tools to check for any hardware issues:
- Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Run the relevant tests for your graphics and display.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi, Rachel..I did everything you suggested: Windows determined all my drivwers were the right ones for my system. I was no able to find a graphics driver for this particular model as HP support had no info on one since I am running Windows 11. Support for Windows 11 is lacking. I checked for Windows 11 updates and I am current on that. Also you suggested to adjust the refresh rate if necessary; how can I know if this is necessary? There are 2 rates to choose from and I do not know which one I would need.
I was able to access the HP PC Hardware Dianostics and ran all the tests listed, but I never saw a specifi test at all for graphics and display anywhere in the diagnostic.
once I restarted, the black screen was not present, but I signed on the next day and it is still swell and alive. I am at my wits end. Do you have any other suggestions?
