Hi @dan659,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop is experiencing a serious issue if it only displays a black screen despite the power and charging LEDs being on. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the charger and remove the battery (if it's removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reinsert the battery, plug in the charger, and try turning it on again.

Check External Display:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI or VGA cable. This will help determine if the issue is with the laptop screen or the internal components.

Inspect the Display:

  • If your laptop has a dedicated brightness function key, ensure the brightness is turned up.
  • Look closely at the screen in a bright environment to see if there's any faint image that indicates the screen is working but not displaying correctly.

Try Different Boot Options:

  • If you see the HP logo when you power on, try repeatedly pressing the F8 key (or Esc, then F8) to access Safe Mode.
  • If it boots into Safe Mode, it might be a driver issue.

Check for Beep Codes:

  • If your laptop beeps when starting, note the pattern of beeps. These can indicate specific hardware issues. Check the HP support website for details on beep codes.

Re-seat RAM and SSD:

  • If you're comfortable opening your laptop, re-seat the RAM modules and any storage drives. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause boot issues.

BIOS Recovery:

  • Try performing a BIOS recovery. You can usually do this by pressing the Windows key + B while powering on the laptop. This will attempt to recover the BIOS and can help if it has become corrupted.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
