Hi @ISSG,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY x360 laptop has a black screen, but the power is on and you can connect to an external monitor, it suggests that there might be an issue with the laptop's display or its connection. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue.

Check Brightness Settings:

  • Sometimes, the screen brightness might be set to the lowest level, making it appear black. Try increasing the screen brightness by pressing the function keys (F2 or F3) on your keyboard.

Restart the Laptop:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve display issues. Restart your laptop and see if the screen comes back on.

Check for Display Output:

  • Press the appropriate function key (usually F4, F5, F8, or F9) to toggle between the laptop's screen and the external monitor. Ensure that the laptop's display is selected.

Inspect for Physical Damage:

  • Examine the laptop's screen for any physical damage, such as cracks or a loose connection to the laptop body.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues. Connect to the external monitor, go to the manufacturer's website, and download and install the latest graphics drivers for your laptop.

Boot in Safe Mode:

  • Boot your laptop in Safe Mode to see if the display works. If it does, it might indicate a software conflict or driver issue.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off your laptop, unplug it from the power source, and remove the battery if possible. Hold the power button down for about 15 seconds. Then, reconnect the power source and turn the laptop back on.

Check Display Settings:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select "Display settings." Make sure the correct display is selected as the primary display.

Run Windows Troubleshooters:

  • Windows has built-in troubleshooting tools. You can access them by going to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot" and running the "Display" troubleshooter.

Inspect for Malware:

  • Malware can sometimes interfere with your system's display. Run a full system scan with your antivirus software to rule out malware as the cause.

Check for Loose Connections:

  • If you are comfortable doing so, you can open up the laptop (if it's not under warranty) and check for loose or disconnected cables that connect the screen to the laptop's motherboard. Reconnecting them securely can sometimes resolve display issues.

Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Many HP laptops have built-in hardware diagnostics tools. You can access these during startup (usually by pressing F2 or another function key) and run tests to identify hardware issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
