I have a HP 6300 SFF Desktop and I was not able to use it for some months now, and I was wondering if the community had any idea on what could be the issue/ fix. I have not installed any new hardware to the computer when this first occured.


One day, when I tried to boot the computer, the monitor screen would show a black screen with a non-blinking underscore on the top left of the screen. It does not seem to respond to any key presses from the keyboard.

What I have tried that results in the same black screen with underscore after power on:

  1. Remove all USB devices
  2. Remove SATA cable to both CD tray and HDD
  3. Moving RAM card around
  4. Plugging in a windows boot USB drive (with and without CD+HDD SATA)
  5. Removing the CMOS battery and waiting for 30mins before power on
  6. Meshing ESC, F1, F2, F8, F10, DEL keys right after power up before black screen with underscore appears with PS\2 and USB keyboard.

Having no RAM cards inserted at all would result in beeping noises (and no black underscore screen, so I'm guessing it is still POSTing?

I've seen some mentions to go into the BIOS or HP Hardware Diagnostics, but the only thing I see when I power it on (with RAM card) is the black screen with underscore, so I don't know if getting to BIOS or HP Hardware Diagnostics is even a possibility.

Does anyone have any idea on what could be going wrong? TIA!
