Hello HP Support,

I have an HP 15s laptop running Windows 11. My laptop frequently crashes with a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) showing the stop code UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (0x7F).

I have already tried Startup Repair, SFC scan, DISM, updating drivers, and Windows recovery, but the issue still occurs. Sometimes the laptop also fails to boot properly after restarting.

Please help me identify whether this is caused by faulty RAM, SSD, BIOS, drivers, or another hardware issue. I would appreciate any troubleshooting steps or recommendations.

Thank you.

Hi,

The stop code UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (0x7F) is often related to low-level hardware or kernel-mode driver problems. Since you already tried Startup Repair, SFC, DISM, driver updates, and Windows recovery, I would focus next on hardware diagnostics and crash dump analysis.

Microsoft reference for Bug Check 0x7F:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/bug-check-0x7f--unexpected-kerne...

Please try the following:

  1. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI outside Windows:
    • Shut down the laptop.
    • Turn it on and immediately tap Esc repeatedly.
    • Press F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    • Run System Test > Extensive Test.
    • Also run the Memory Test and Storage/SSD Test separately if available.

HP hardware failure testing guide:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2854458-2733239-16

  1. If any test fails, note the Failure ID and provide it to HP Support.
  2. Check whether Windows created dump files:
    • C:\Windows\Minidump
    • C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP

If dump files exist, they can help identify whether the crash is caused by RAM, storage, graphics, Wi-Fi, antivirus, or another kernel driver.

  1. Update BIOS, chipset, graphics, storage, and wireless drivers from HP Support for the exact HP 15s product number:
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/laptops

HP BIOS update guide:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4129273-2331498-16

  1. Do not update BIOS if the laptop is unstable on battery or randomly powers off. Make sure it is connected to stable AC power before updating BIOS.
  2. If the laptop sometimes fails to boot after the BSOD, pay special attention to the SSD/storage test. A failing SSD can also cause crashes and boot problems.

If all HP diagnostics pass but the BSOD continues, I would recommend sharing the minidump files or asking HP/Microsoft support to analyze them. At that point, the issue is likely either an intermittent RAM/SSD problem or a kernel driver conflict that basic repair commands will not detect.
