I believe my computer has a bug that needs to be removed, but I continue to get the blue screen. It’s an old HP laptop.

I plugged in a diffuser that connects to the computer ughhhhh, now I am unable to even see my login screen.

When I do a hard reset, the black screen with the HP symbol pops up.

It spins and then reads: Repairing your HP (but it never repairs).

After pressing escape continuously I am able to access HP trouble shooting, but the factory reset is unavailable.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Hi @Joybell91

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That sounds incredibly frustrating. Since your laptop isn’t letting you log in and Safe Mode isn’t accessible, we’ll need to try alternative recovery methods.

Steps to Fix the Blue Screen Issue:

1. Try Startup Repair Again

  • When on the HP logo screen, press Esc repeatedly until the menu appears.
  • Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Repair.
  • Let Windows attempt repairs—if this keeps looping, move to the next step.

2. Perform a System Restore

  • From Advanced Options, select System Restore.
  • If restore points exist, choose one from before the issue started.
  • Follow the prompts to revert system changes.

3. Boot into Command Prompt & Run Repairs

  • In Advanced Options, select Command Prompt.
  • Type the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
    chkdsk /r /f C:
    sfc /scannow
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • These will check for disk errors, corrupted system files, and OS issues.

4. Try a Hard Reset (With Battery Removal)

  • If your laptop has a removable battery, unplug the charger and remove the battery.
  • Hold the power button for 30+ seconds, then reinsert the battery and try turning it on.

5. Attempt to Boot from a Windows Installation USB

  • If none of the above work, you may need to create a Windows Recovery USB on another computer.
  • Plug it into your HP laptop, restart, and boot from USB (Esc → Boot Options → USB Drive).
  • From there, try repairing Windows or reinstalling it.

If Nothing Works

Since factory reset is unavailable, the laptop may need a fresh Windows installation. If you need data recovery, I can guide you through retrieving files before reinstalling Windows.

Let me know how far you get!
