I was using my laptop and the GPU usage was around 95% to 100% for 2 to 3 seconds . Suddenley the system freezed and nothing was working and blue screen  appeared and the laptop  restarted within few seconds. Now the laptop is working but I'm curious why did it happened and what can I do so that it won't happen again. Is it okay to use applications or games that use the gpu 100% or I shouldn't use those applications or games? please guide me

Hi @Ashish0807,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Experiencing a blue screen (often referred to as a Blue Screen of Death or BSOD) while your GPU usage spikes can be concerning. Here's a guide to understanding and addressing this issue.

Why It Happened

  1. High GPU Usage: When the GPU is pushed to its limits, it can sometimes cause instability, especially if it’s not properly cooled or if there are driver issues.
  2. Overheating: If the GPU or other components overheat, it can lead to system crashes. Ensure your laptop’s cooling system is working efficiently.
  3. Driver Issues: Outdated or corrupt GPU drivers can cause crashes. Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date.
  4. Hardware Problems: Issues with the GPU or other hardware components can also cause crashes.

What You Can Do

Update Drivers: Check for the latest GPU drivers from the HP website or through Windows Update.

Check Temperature: Use monitoring software like MSI Afterburner or HWMonitor to check your GPU temperatures. Ensure your laptop's cooling system is functioning properly and clean any dust from vents or fans.

Check for System Updates: Ensure your operating system is up to date. Sometimes, system updates include critical fixes for stability issues.

Run Diagnostics: Many laptops come with built-in diagnostics tools. Run these tests to check for hardware issues.

Avoid Overclocking: If you’re overclocking your GPU, revert to default settings. Overclocking can increase instability, especially if the system isn’t properly cooled.

Review BSOD Error Codes: When a BSOD occurs, it usually provides an error code. Note this code and search for it online to get more specific information about what might be causing the crash.

Perform a Clean Boot: Boot your laptop with only essential services and startup programs to see if a background application might be causing the issue.

Check Event Viewer: The Windows Event Viewer can provide additional details about system crashes. Look under the "System" and "Application" logs for errors related to the crash.

Using High GPU Usage Applications

  • Gaming and Intensive Applications: It's generally okay to use applications or games that use 100% GPU, provided your laptop is well-cooled and the drivers are up to date. Ensure that the games or applications are compatible with your system and are not known to cause issues.
  • Monitor Performance: Keep an eye on GPU usage and temperatures. If you consistently experience issues at high usage, it might indicate a problem with your hardware or cooling system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks sir for your response. I've runed Hp hardware diagnostics test and software tests and everything seems to be fine, but sometimes I face screen freeze issues when there is a 100% ram usage for few seconds.

When I am not using any applications the ram usage is 40%-45% and when I try to use some applications and programs screen freezing starts and when I open task manager it shows 100% ram usage and GPU works properly and it shows temperature below 70 degree centigrade.

So what steps can I follow to solve this high ram usage issue?
