Hello,
I keep getting the error message "Boot Device Not Found" when loading my laptop. I've tried running the system diagnostics to check the hard drive, but it just says what's in the picture....I have tried enabling legacy in the BIOS. That worked for a little then but the error eventually came back. I tried taking the back off and carefully making sure nothing wasn't loose with the drive and cables. This too caused it to work for a short time but then the error message came back. I'm not sure what to do. When I shut down the laptop, it brings me to the error page " Boot Device Not Found". I don't have anything else external attached to the laptop. Any suggestions?

Hi @Woodsome,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are getting the "Boot Device Not Found" error (3F0) on your HP 15 laptop typically indicates an issue with the hard drive or the system's ability to detect it. Since you've already tried enabling legacy support in the BIOS and checking for loose connections, here are additional troubleshooting steps:
Please try the following Troubleshoots steps.
1. Turn off the Unit.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter.
3. Remove any discs from the disc drive.
4. Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.
5. Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.
6. Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.
7. Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.
Step 2
Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and Restart the unit
Step3
The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit
Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.
1. Check BIOS Boot Settings
- Restart your laptop and press F10 (or the key specific to your model) to enter the BIOS setup.
- Navigate to the Boot Options section and ensure:
- The boot order prioritizes your hard drive.
- Secure Boot is disabled (if necessary).
- Legacy support is enabled only if Secure Boot isn't required.
- Save changes and restart the laptop.
2. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (Extensive Test)
- Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter the HP diagnostics menu.
- Choose the Hard Drive Extensive Test option to thoroughly check for disk issues.
- If the test fails, note the failure ID or error code for reference.
3. Check for Corrupt Boot Files
- Use a Windows installation USB or recovery media:
- Insert the bootable media and boot from it (set it as the first option in BIOS).
- Choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
- Run these commands:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd - Restart the laptop and see if the issue persists.
4. Reset BIOS to Default
- Restart the laptop and enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F10).
- Look for an option to Restore Factory Settings or Reset to Default.
- Save changes and restart.
5. Check for Hard Drive Health Using External Tools
- If you have another PC, remove the hard drive and connect it as an external drive using a SATA-to-USB adapter or dock.
- If the drive is failing, back up important data immediately and replace the drive.
6. Replace the Hard Drive
- If diagnostics or external tools indicate that the drive is faulty, you will need to replace it.
- After replacing the drive, reinstall Windows using a bootable USB.
- Make sure to use a drive of the same size and interface (e.g., SATA).
