Spectre X360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Please Help!

I have a perfectly good HP Spectre X360.   Today, I got a system tray popup that said there was a firmware update.   I told it to go ahead.  There were no errors anywhere in the process and no red flags of any kind.  Finally it said "Reboot to Finish"  or something like that.

Long story short, I rebooted and and it says "Boot Device Not Found   Please Install an Operating system"

The machine passes ALL of its Hard drive Checks, quick and comprehensive.  There is nothing wrong with the hard drive and it had been working perfectly fine.  None of the UEFI Boot settings have been changed in any way.

Now it is a very expensive paperweight?   I had important work to get done on this computer over the weekend.

What are my options?  did the Firmware update screw up the encryption or mess up the boot record in the UEFI?

Hi @vsthose, I am the @Chimney_83. It looks like you were interacting with @Riddle_Decipher, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps.

Have you tried to do a BIOS default?

May I know the exact product number of your computer? Click here. Please do not share the serial number of your computer.

Recommend you boot the computer to BIOS by tapping F10 repeatedly and do a BIOS default.

If the issue persists, you can do BIOS restore. Click here for assistance.

Try to boot the computer to recovery manager by tapping F11 repeatedly during startup and try to do a system restore to a date when the computer was working fine. Click here for assistance.

Let me know how it goes.

@vsthose

Welcome to the HP Forums,
I hope you're well 🙂

As I understand the laptop doesn't boot into the windows and instead gets you the error message-"boot device not found",

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you perform hard reset/power drain?

Was the firmware interrupted in any way, as that could have caused the issue?

While you respond to that, Please follow the below steps to identify and resolve this concern:

Step 1: Perform a hard reset

HP Notebook PCs - Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset

Step 2: (normally, the computer should turn on by now, if it does follow Step 2) Restore BIOS to default settings

Step 3: Test the hard drive using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI (In your case, Skip to Step 4)

Step 4: Perform an HP System Recovery

If none of the above actions resolved the error condition, back up your personal data and then perform an HP System Recovery on the notebook.

Note: The HP recovery manager would give you an option to create a backup before initiating the OS reinstallation, please utilize the same accordingly:

If the issue persists, it's most likely a hardware connection failure and you will need to contact the HP phone support for a hardware service:

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get the phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty repair services under the manufacturer's warranty will be free of charge.

RD,

I did ALL of those things multiple times on Friday.

I know how to do a hard reset on the HP Spectre, though I found from reading, two different ways.  However, many instructions tell you to pull the battery and the HP Spectre is a sealed unit.  I really wish instructions could be given that fit the EXACT model and not something generically.   Did not work.  It keeps re-booting to the same message after maybe 5 hard resets.

I tested the hard drive with the UEFI PC Hardware Diagnosics twice and the drive tests perfectly fine.  There were also no issues at all with the computer prior to performing this update.

PC System Recovery??  really?  I can't even access the drive.  How am I supposed to back something off of it?

Besides the fact, your UPDATE CAUSED THIS.  The computer was perfectly fine before the update.  I doubt it is a connector error.  The computer was not moved or jostled in any way and the case has never been opened.  A Hardware connection error doesnt just "happen" in coincidence with a Firmware update!!!!!

Its a 13t-4100.

Trying your suggestion now.

A BIOS default fixed the problem!

Interesting because I made no changes to the BIOS prior to the HP-Initiated update.

But Thank you!

Thanks for the reply and glad that the issue is resolved. Sometimes an update might change settings in BIOS which could create such issues.

Please do post your technical queries on our Forums for assistance.
