HP Pavilion x360 Laptop- 14m-dw0023dx

I have an HP Pavilion x 360 Convertible laptop. After a windows update yesterday, my laptop will no longer boot if I have any devices plugged in to USB or other ports. If I unplug them, it boots fine. I checked Bios and boot from USB is disabled. Any ideas?

Hi @hraes,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the recent Windows update may have caused a conflict with your laptop's boot process, particularly with how it handles peripheral devices. Here are a few steps you can take to resolve this issue.

Check Boot Order in BIOS/UEFI:

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (usually by pressing F2, F10, DEL, or ESC during startup).
  • Verify the boot order to ensure that the internal hard drive is prioritized over USB or other external devices.

Update BIOS/UEFI:

  • An outdated BIOS/UEFI might be incompatible with recent updates. Check the HP support website for your model and see if there's a BIOS/UEFI update available.
  • Follow the instructions provided by HP to update the BIOS/UEFI.

Reset BIOS/UEFI to Default Settings:

  • Sometimes resetting the BIOS/UEFI to its default settings can resolve boot issues.
  • In the BIOS/UEFI menu, look for an option to load default settings or reset to factory settings, then save and exit.

Check Fast Boot Settings:

  • Fast Boot can sometimes cause issues with peripheral devices.
  • In the BIOS/UEFI, find the Fast Boot option and try disabling it to see if it resolves the problem.

Disable USB Legacy Support:

  • In the BIOS/UEFI settings, look for an option related to USB Legacy Support and try disabling it. This can sometimes fix boot issues related to USB devices.

Update Drivers:

  • Boot into Windows (without any peripherals connected) and check Device Manager for any driver issues.
  • Right-click on any devices with warning icons and choose to update the drivers. You can also visit the HP website to download the latest drivers for your model.

Check for Additional Windows Updates:

  • Sometimes, a subsequent update might fix the issue caused by a previous one.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Power Management Settings:

  • Certain power management settings might cause conflicts with USB devices.
  • Go to Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, and right-click each USB Root Hub, then go to Properties > Power Management and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you might consider rolling back the recent Windows update:

  1. Roll Back the Windows Update:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates.
    • Find the recent update that coincides with the start of your issue and uninstall it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
